A girl is looking into a handheld mirror.
But I cannot see the reflection she sees in it.
What kind of face is she seeing when she looks at herself?
When I thought about taking her portrait, I realized that what I really wanted to capture was the mirror—the one showing an image I cannot see.
I began borrowing handheld mirrors from many people and scanning them, carefully making sure that my own reflection wouldn’t appear.
What emerged on the scans was a pitch-black space and the mirror itself—not the image of a face, but the quiet presence of the mirror that had once held it.
